Robotic pool cleaner battery life: what the runtime claims mean, by mode

Researched, no hands-on testingUpdated By the RoboPool Clean Lab editorial team

Short answer: most box runtimes are best-case figures for a single mode. Across the 20 battery-powered cleaner records in our data, maker headline runtimes run from 90 to 300 minutes for floor or unstated modes [C]. Only 3 of the 20 have a runtime that a named independent reviewer says they timed or observed: about 120 minutes for the WYBOT C2 (Bob Vila), 100–185 minutes depending on mode for the WYBOT C2 Vision (eftm), and more than 210 minutes for the Beatbot AquaSense 2 (Freshly Charged, a lower bound). We don’t time robots ourselves. This page sets out what makers claim, labels the mode every time, and shows where reviewers’ numbers exist.

The full table: all 20 battery-powered cleaners

The last column is our calculation from maker claims, not a performance measurement. It divides the claimed floor or headline minutes by the maker’s claimed pool area in thousands of square feet, which shows how generous an area claim is next to the runtime claim. It says nothing about how well a robot cleans. We don’t calculate it when the area is retailer-listed, the maker’s runtime figures conflict, or the figure is surface-only.

Notes: charge times are maker claims unless marked. Most maker pages don’t publish battery capacity. Figures marked [R] or “unverified” come from retailer or search-result listings and are shown for reference only.

Corded reference. A corded robot has no battery, so there’s no runtime to compare. The Dolphin Nautilus CC Plus has a default 2-hour cycle on the Maytronics residential page, and another Maytronics listing says 3 hours [C]. US retail listings give a 60 ft cable [R]. Its maximum pool is 40 ft on one Maytronics page and “up to 50 ft” on another [C]. Cycle length is how long the programmed clean lasts, not a limit set by a battery.

Why box numbers mislead

Eco and floor-only modes

Many headline figures are for the gentlest mode. WYBOT’s C2 page gives one runtime, 180 minutes in Eco mode, which it describes as floor-focused, and none for any other mode [C]. Aiper’s Scuba S1 page describes Eco as 45-minute cycles every 48 hours [C]. PCWorld describes the same Eco pattern for the Beatbot Sora 10 (June 12, 2026) and the Aiper Scuba S1 Pro (July 1, 2024). When a figure doesn’t name its mode, we write “mode not stated” rather than guess.

Eco schedules and weekly timers cap the total

Two limits have nothing to do with battery capacity. First, a 45-minute Eco cycle every 48 hours works out to three or four cycles a week, or 135 to 180 minutes of cleaning (our calculation). Second, The Pool Nerd (March 12, 2026) read the WYBOT C2’s weekly floor timer in the app as totalling 180 minutes a week, split into 60-, 40- and 30-minute sessions. That was read from the app, not timed, and the article’s session numbers don’t agree with each other, so treat it as low confidence. WYBOT’s page says the app schedules up to four cleanings a week [C]. If you run the robot on a schedule rather than in one long run, the box runtime may never be the limit.

Conflicting figures on the same maker page

Walls and waterline cost runtime on some pages and not others

Beatbot’s own figures show the cost directly. The Sora 10 drops from 300 to 240 minutes when walls and waterline are included, a 60-minute (20%) drop [C]. The AquaSense 2 Ultra drops from 300 to 270 minutes, or 10% [C]. On the AquaSense 2, Beatbot’s comparison page gives about 3.5 hours for walls against 4 hours for floor [C]. The AquaSense X lists 300 minutes for both floor and walls plus waterline [C].

Reviewers’ numbers don’t follow one clean rule. The Pool Nerd called the WYBOT C2’s wall and waterline runs “noticeably shorter” but gave no minutes (March 12, 2026). In eftm’s set for the C2 Vision, Wall mode (125–140 minutes) and Waterline mode (125–170 minutes) ran longer than Floor mode (115–120 minutes). That’s one pool and two units, and the reviewer doesn’t explain it. Mode names don’t tell you which mode drains the battery fastest, so check the figure for the mode you’ll use.

Surface-skimming minutes are not cleaning minutes

Several headline numbers are surface-only: the Aiper Scuba V3 Ultra at 480 minutes, the Aiper Scuba X1 Pro Max at 600, the Beatbot AquaSense 2 Ultra and AquaSense X at 600, and the Beatbot Sora 70 at 420 [C]. These are minutes spent skimming the water surface. They don’t tell you how long the robot cleans the floor or walls, so we leave them out of the floor comparison and the last column of the table. Dedicated skimmers will get their own guide.

How we collect measurements

FAQ

How long do cordless robotic pool cleaners run? Leaving out surface-only figures, maker claims in our data run from 90 minutes (Aiper Scuba SE) to 300 minutes [C]. The 300-minute claims are floor-only for the Beatbot Sora 10, AquaSense 2 Ultra and AquaSense X and the Aiper Scuba X1 Pro Max, floor for the Sora 70, and mode not stated for the Sora 30. Three models have a figure a named reviewer timed: about 120 minutes (WYBOT C2, Bob Vila), 100–185 minutes by mode (WYBOT C2 Vision, eftm), and more than 210 minutes (Beatbot AquaSense 2, Freshly Charged, a lower bound).

Why does my robot run shorter than the box says? The data points to three reasons. The headline figure is often for Eco or floor-only mode. Wall and waterline modes cost runtime on some models. Eco cycles and weekly schedules split the total. The table gives the mode next to every claim where the maker states one.

Does wall and waterline cleaning drain the battery faster? On Beatbot’s published figures, yes for the Sora 10 (300 to 240 minutes, 20%) and the AquaSense 2 Ultra (300 to 270 minutes, 10%) [C]. Beatbot lists no drop for the AquaSense X. In eftm’s per-mode set for the WYBOT C2 Vision, Wall and Waterline ran longer than Floor.

How long does a pool robot take to charge? Maker-claimed charge times in our records run from about 3 hours (WYBOT C2, C2 Vision and C1; Aiper Scuba SE) to about 4.5 hours (Beatbot AquaSense 2 Ultra and AquaSense X) [C]. Many pages publish no charge time. Charge only as your manual describes, with the supplied charger.

Is a corded robot better for big pools? A corded robot runs a programmed cycle (2 hours by default on the Dolphin Nautilus CC Plus page [C]) and has no battery to run down. Its limit is cable length against pool length, listed as 40 or 50 ft on Maytronics pages. We don’t rank one type above the other here. A full cordless vs corded comparison is planned.
